How to Replace an Audi G28 Engine Speed Sensor

It transmits a signal to the ECU via an uncolored wire (T55/49), then to the tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

It is located on the outside of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends a signal to ECU pin T55/49 through an uncolored wire. The ECU utilizes this information to regulate fuel and boost. It also sends an alert to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

The sensor serves as a reference for comparing with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu needs to know when the crankshaft reached TDC and also the position of the camshaft, in order to activate the spark and injectors.

Yesterday, as i was accelerating off the highway paytoll at full speed I noticed a significant drop in power. It was as if the engine had run out of gas. Or, my injectors were not firing. In the morning, i removed the spark plugs, 3 were soaked with gazoline and the 4th one was dry. I put a piece of tissue over each injector hole and when I start the engine with no sparks, the three that have gazoline pop right out. The 4th one stays closed. I tested the ground connection of ECU pins 14,30 and 48/55. I got 0ohm. I think the issue is elsewhere.

I also tried to reset the PID without success. The car will start when the G28 is unplugged and it more info runs perfectly when it is connected but it still has the intermittent misfire issue at higher RPM.
